Resilient, well-equipped, and deeply ideological, SS troops comprised more than 38 divisions and numerous other regimental and battalion-sized units, totaling nearly a million men in active service.
Their armored divisions earned significant acclaim for their battlefield prowess. Despite occasional tensions with regular army units, most SS formations fought with fierce determination against formidable odds until the war's conclusion in Berlin, 1945.
The Waffen-SS remains a controversial organization. While their zeal and discipline were undeniable, their legacy is overshadowed by numerous documented atrocities.
